Jim Moriarty has had a very rough go of life.

At some point before the events of the Reichenbach Fall, he was ambushed by a rival crimelord's men, and assaulted viciously, left for dead. The attack left him without his left foot and right eye. The details of the attack are not commonly discussed by Jim, only a very few know them. Sherlock Holmes knows them due to the fact that Jim staggered into 221 B immediately afterwards at 4 AM, badly injured and in need of assistance. It was not merely that Baker Street was close, it was the only place he felt safe to even go to. Coming to Sherlock and more than that, John Watson for help might have seemed extraordinary to some, but for Moriarty it was pretty well logical good sense.

Going to a hospital was far too dangerous.

Suffice to say in the attack they harmed him in the most devastating of ways.

But he is a fighter.

He has carried on, and one eyepatch and cane later, Jim Moriarty is neither down nor out.

Close in his life are Sherlock and Moran, though Moran is presently on a mission to Africa that Jim hopes he will return soon from. He is missed.

Sherlock is more complicated. It was only after Jim was attacked and hidden in 221b for three weeks, that the two men became genuinely attached and close -- the experience seemed to bond them. Whether or not John Watson is pleased by this, is not a hard guess.

Mycroft Holmes remains a severe - and dangerous - temptation.
